About this recording

Ian Giles was born in Glasgow, was raised in Ayrshire then came to Caithness in 1973. He lives in the former Thrumster Station house on the former Wick to Lybster railway line. In 2002 he was involved in setting up The Yarrows Heritage Trust, designed to develop the natural and social history of the area. One of the projects undertaken by the Trust has been the restoration of the old station building. Ian recalls finding receipts in the loft and these have been instrumental in building a great social history of the railway. He talks about finding correspondence relating to a missing crate of beer, during war time. Ian was recorded at The Pulteneytown People's Project Men's Shed.
