About this recording

Isaac Williamson, better known as “Joycer”, comes from a travelling background and was born in the former Latheron poorhouse. In this interview he talks about growing up in Wick and some of the difficulties faced by the travelling families. The Williamsons lived in Henrietta Street before moving to Grant Street (“Ducksie”). Joycer remembers when the harbour was packed with fishing boats and describes where fish yards and coal yards were located around upper Pulteneytown. He mentions the building that was Mr Fullarton’s school, “Fullie’s school”, and recalls his time working on various construction sites in the county as well as welding at the Nigg fabrication yard in Easter Ross where workers from Wick were given accommodation on a boat.
