Duration: 8m 34s
Recorded: 26 July 2018
About this recording
John Macrae was born in Dunbeath and developed a passion for the bagpipes as a child, after a parade in the village by Wick Pipe Band. He played the pipes during his national service and, after returning to Caithness, became a member of Thurso Pipe Band.
In the second part of this interview, conducted in his home overlooking Thurso Bay, John shares a few of the stories and anecdotes he has picked up in his 70 years as a piper and his long career as a photographer.
The incidental music is a short extract from Leaving Port Askaig, played by John on the chanter.
