About this recording
Jenny Bruce was born at Berriedale Post Office and grew up in Wick. In this interview she shares some of her in-depth knowledge of the great civil engineer Thomas Telford (1757-1834) and highlights his enduring legacy to Caithness.
She explains how Telford transformed Wick, paving the way for the town to become the herring capital of Europe in the 19th century: the “Herringopolis”. She says: “Thomas Telford’s approach to town planning and harbour engineering created the necessary conditions, and provided the premises and accommodation, which allowed the herring industry to flourish.”
Jenny has been instrumental in developing and promoting the Telford Trail and interpretive panels located around Pulteneytown and the harbour area.
Jenny is an artist and retired teacher.
