About this recording
Jenny Bruce was born at Berriedale Post Office and grew up in Wick. In this interview she talks about her childhood home in the town’s Bank Row – in a house that is now part of the Wick Heritage Museum complex.
She remembers playing in the courtyard at the back and escaping to a secret hiding place at the top of the brae, eating sticks of rhubarb and watching the fishing boats return laden with herring.
Jenny’s father became the water engineer for Wick and later for the county scheme, and she recalls being with him when the Castle of Mey’s water supply was connected.
Jenny is an artist and retired teacher.
