About this recording
Phyllis Gray (née Martin) was born in Derby and moved to Wick as a child. By the age of eight she was a member of Wick Junior Choir, singing at venues around Caithness as well as making special journeys to cities such as Aberdeen, Glasgow, Edinburgh and even London where they were welcomed by Caithness exiles’ associations. In this interview she shares some of those memories and recalls important local events for the choir such as the Wick Herring Queen Festival. She continues to sing in the St Fergus Church choir. At the end of the recording there’s an impromptu duet by Phyllis and her husband Harry of a song they performed at the Caithness Music Festival in their courting days.
