Linotype Model 4

Viewed 118 times

Our Linotype Model 4 is a molten metal typesetting machine.

Invented in 1890, these machines cast solid lines of type to a set length, at up to 17,000 letters an hour. The line included all the necessary upper and lower case letters, punctuation marks, figures, and spaces.

After the line of type is cast, it is ejected into a metal tray at the side of the machine known as a galley. The galley is then inked so than an impression (or proof) can be made on paper so that the words can be checked against the original text for any mistakes.
